Enduro riding has never been easier. The new KTM Freeride 350 unites extremely easy handling with a low seat height and outstanding ergonomics. Thanks to a minimal weight of only 99.5 kg, the rider is always completely in control, even on the toughest trails, whether it be rough terrain, narrow single tracks or wide gravel roads. The state-of-the-art 350 cm³ DOHC four-stroke engine, newly laid out especially for the Freeride 350 has proven to be the ideal drive unit for this vehicle concept and scores highly in every situation with controllable, torque-oriented performance characteristics.

 

CHASSIS FEATURES

FRAME »

A completely new composite frame design made from high quality chrome-molybdenum steel, combined with forged aluminium elements, forms the backbone of the Freeride 350. The front steel frame profiles are combined with the multifunctional aluminium profiles by means of sturdy threaded joints. This revolutionary frame concept is responsible for high levels of tracking stability and safety, as well as minimal weight. A frame geometry selected for high agility with a relatively steep steering head angle and short wheelbase benefits the rider in tough terrain.

SUBFRAME »

A subframe made from high-strength plastic is bolted to the main frame and provides sufficient space for the electronic components of the engine management system. This solution makes a major contribution to the lightweight construction concept of the vehicle.

FRONT SUSPENSION »

The suspension of the Freeride 350 has been specially designed for this vehicle and complies with the high KTM standards. Together with the high quality, CNC-machined triple clamps, a new 43 mm WP upside-down fork with 250 mm suspension travel provides for superb stability, excellent responsiveness and outstanding damping.

REAR SUSPENSION »

At the rear, a newly developed PDS shock absorber with 260 mm travel, linked directly to the swingarm, guarantees maximum suspension comfort and sufficient safety, even on the most demanding terrain. Both rebound and compression damping can be set to suit the rider and the conditions (high and low-speed compression damping on the PDS shock absorber). A suspension kit in order to lower the seat height by 25 mm is available in the KTM PowerParts.

SWING ARM »

In conjunction with the new frame concept the engineers developed a new cast aluminium swing arm weighing only 3.2 kg. The design provides certain flex characteristics supporting the suspension while high torsional rigidity guarantees excellent track stability.

BODYWORK »

The bodywork of the Freeride 350 has been de-signed completely from scratch. The result is practical ergonomics with unrestricted freedom of movement due to the extremely slim seat and spoiler lines, and bodywork with excellent contact points between rider and machine. Well protected from dirt, grip recesses integrated in the plastic subframe provide an effective hold should the rear wheel ever become stuck in the mud. Further-more, the fenders and headlight mask are also new designs for the Freeride.

SEAT »

The long, slender seat ensures unrestricted freedom of movement and a very good level of seating comfort. It can be tipped up easily for filling the bike with fuel via the intelligent seat locking system. With a seat height of only 895 mm, the Freeride 350 always provides the rider with good ground contact and therefore better riding safety, even in tough terrain. A slightly lower seat is available in the KTM PowerParts range.

FUEL TANK »

The fuel tank made from transparent polyethylene lies well protected between the upper frame profiles beneath the seat. The capacity of approx. 5.5 l is sufficient with the economical four-stroke engine featuring fuel injection, even for longer tours. Thanks to the transparent material, the fuel level can easily be inspected from the exterior and a low-fuel light positioned between steering head and seat gives an additional indication. An easily accessible and well protected air filter cartridge is housed at the rear of the fuel tank and its height enables an impressive wading depth.

WHEELS »

The lightweight wheels, featuring CNC-machined hubs and high-end GIANT aluminium rims (18 and 21 inch).

TYRES »

Rich in traction and thanks to the high positive proportion in the profile, the Dunlop D803 trial tyres leave much less of an impression in the ground than conventional enduro competition tyres. The high casing provides appreciably more comfort and benefits the suspension. With the soft and therefore grippy rubber compound, these tyres score highly in demanding rocky terrain and riding over roots.

FOOT PEGS »

By turning the foot pegs brackets by 180° the position of the pegs can be moved 8 mm backwards. By doing so the rider can influence the traction and cornering behaviour of the bike. Front position means easier cornering, back position better traction.

EXHAUST SYSTEM »

When designing the exhaust system, engineers focused their attention on low noise levels and emissions, as well as very rideable, high-torque engine characteristics. Exhaust gases are fed through a central header pipe underneath the engine, protected by the frame and a sturdy bash plate, to the two aluminium silencers. Each of these is equipped with a catalytic converter, effectively reducing both emissions and riding noise to an environmentally friendly level.

COOLING SYSTEM »

The cooling system routes from the cylinder head directly to the radiator, which is well protected behind the front frame tube and fitted with a radiator fan in serial production.

BRAKES »

The Freeride 350 features a newly developed brake system made by FORMULA. The new master cylinders and the radially mounted callipers with 4 pistons in the front and 2 in the rear go perfectly with the lightweight wave rotors of 240 and 210 mm diameter. For the front the KTM PowerParts offer a 260 mm disc for even more brake performance.

ENGINE

STARTER »

The 350cc engine is effortlessly activated with an electric starter that is well protected behind the cylinder and ensures reliable starting.

DOHC CYLINDER HEAD »

Four steel valves control the charge exchange process, guaranteeing highest levels of durability. They are actuated by means of two overhead camshafts and DLC-coated cam followers. The top engine speed is reduced to 10,000 /min. With a respectable maximum output of 23 hp, the engine produces more than enough power to climb the steepest of slopes with the greatest of ease.

VALVE TRAIN »

The crankshaft turns a laterally mounted intermediate gear, which drives the cam chain and at the same time acts as balancer shaft and holds the water pump. A hydraulic cam chain tensioner secures a reliable tension of the chain and therefore precise cam timing.

ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS) »

The engine management system from Keihin with electronic fuel injection and 42 mm throttle body ensures spontaneous, powerful responsiveness and handling, as well as making a significant contribution to the low fuel consumption. Convenient temperature and altitude compensation are state of the art. Closed-loop lambda control guarantees the efficient reduction of exhaust emissions by the two catalytic converters. Additional engine characteristics can be activated with an optional map select switch.

TRANSMISSION »

The six-gear transmission has been designed especially to match the characteristics of the 350cc engine and meet the demands of an offroad bike, excelling with its precise and easy shifting. The short 48/11 secondary drive is beneficial especially when the going gets tough.

CLUTCH »

A smoothly operated clutch with integrated hub damping and effective diaphragm spring makes it possible to keep the whole clutch package extremely compact and light. The clutch is equipped with a wear-free steel basket, 8 steel carrier lining discs and extremely heat-resistant friction linings. These are pre-tensioned by means of a diaphragm spring, substantially reducing the operating force required to pull the clutch. The hydraulic clutch actuation system from FORMULA was developed especially for the Freeride 350 and guarantees energy-saving and easily controllable modulation.

EQUIPMENT FEATURES

There are plenty of features on the new KTM Freeride 350 that make it stand out from other brands. For example, the prestigious composite frame and the plastic subframe, the high-quality, fully adjustable WP suspension, the machined triple clamps providing 4 mounting positions for the tapered aluminium handlebar, the variably mounted foot rests, the comfortable hydraulic clutch and, not least, the extra-light, elaborately styled wheels. In addition a KTM tool kit is supplied with the bike, which allows disassembling nearly the whole bike due to KTM specific standardised screws.
